Forest of Birse to Birse Church

Distance 12.5 kms Ascent 275 metres OS map 44

This is an A to B walk, starting at the Forest of Birse car park (Grid Ref. NO532906) and finishing at Birse Church (NO554973). The walk takes us westwards, past Ballochan Farm ( NO523904), then south of Birse Castle to meet the Fungle Road at NO516905. We follow the Fungle Road, climbing northwards to skirt the steep valley of the Gwaves and on to the shooting lodge ( NO514921). Past the shooting lodge, we climb to Carnferg at 525m ( NO522933). There is a memorial cairn to the laird of Birse Castle, Joseph Robert Heaven (Oct 1911), and a stone circle built around the triangulation point; this is a convenient place to shelter, have lunch and enjoy the views over the Dee valley. From Carnferg, it is a steady descent to the forest gate (NO539942), Balfour crossroads ( NO556963) and on to Birse Church. Total Time: Approx. 4 hrs.
