Mount Battock

Sunday 4th April 2004

OS sheet: 45/44

Distance: 23 km

Ascent: 600m

Starting from Spittal Cottage (GR 646846) on the Cairn o' Mount road, we'll head upstream along a good landrover track by the Water of Dye to Charr Bothy and beyond as far as the Burn of Badymicks. There we take the track heading north west, and the views open out as we gradually gain height. The track continues westward until we strike off on a footpath for the final steady ascent to the trig point on Mount Battock (GR 549845). The climb should be rewarded with fine views over the mounth and beyond. To return, we retrace our steps as far as the junction with the Burn of Badymicks track. Then we continue eastwards to the Hill of Edendocher, where the familiar tor of Clachnaben comes in sight. We cross over to it (GR 864865) and descend by the Trust Path (see The Scottish Mountaineer March issue p. 38) via Miller's Bog to finish at the car park (GR 649868).

Walkers must wear walking boots, warm and waterproof clothing, hat and gloves and take plenty food and liquids. THESE ARE ESSENTIAL. Be prepared for winter conditions snow and ice.
